Facilitate dialog

Do you see the same thing I do?

A shared understanding

In an aeroplane, the first objective of the crew is to ensure that all seats arrive at their destination at the same time.

And for this, as in a Restorative Circle, facilitating dialogue within the crew is central.

For the past two years, I've been doing what everyone else does: I've been trying to cope with the means at my disposal, and in particular, my thirty years' experience of working with a crew. And there are a lot of lights on our dashboards: oranges, reds... and even some greens.

So here we are, drawing a parallel with what works in an aircraft when we are faced with an event that is out of the ordinary, a failure or other, the first point (the F of FORDEC for those in the know), is to agree on the diagnosis. In the case of a failure, we know that the diagnosis stage, if badly carried out, can lead to choosing completely unsuitable responses, or even to making the situation worse. See the competence sheet on the theme of decision making for airline pilots in the image opposite.

Two tracks

So, with a view to updating a diagnosis of the situation that can be widely shared and thus foster our collective intelligence, I am looking for leads. Recently (May 2022), I came across two of them, which I find very promising 😄 :

  • Laurent Gounelle, famous novelist > The Awakening - February 2022 + related videos
  • Mattias Desmet, professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium > The Psychology of Totalitarianism - June 2022 + related videos.

Quote from the previous Laurent Gounelle novel:

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind its faithful servant. We have created a society that honours the servant and has forgotten the gift.

- Albert Einstein

From the book description of Mattias Desmet:

Drawing on Hannah Arendt's seminal work on totalitarianism, The Origins of Totalitarianism, Desmet offers a scathing critique of the cultural 'groupthink' that existed before the pandemic, but which has steadily and inexorably progressed during the Covid crisis. He warns of the dangers of our current societal landscape, our media consumption and our reliance on manipulative technologies, and then proposes simple solutions - both individual and collective - to avoid the voluntary sacrifice of our freedoms.

Enjoy your reading!

PS: in pursuing the metaphor between our ways of taking care of our lives and the wisdom that can be inspired by taking flight (cf. St-Exupéry!), I was wondering how to transpose the well-known formula in aeronautics: "Posé, pas cassé, c'est gagné". As the end of life seemed a little too far away, I wondered if an intermediate goal could be the one proposed by Byron Katie: "Love what is" ☺️
