|As I write this, it suddenly occurs to me that when I reread writings or diaries from my own young self, I am often pleasantly surprised by what I wrote at that age. Why do we not see children’s capacities? Why do we forget the capacities we ourselves once had as children? Perhaps because we want to maintain the illusion that we are growing and making progress? I do not doubt that many people do in some respects actually grow throughout life. But perhaps they are mainly the people who rediscover the child within themselves?
